I have decided to read a book a week in 2021, and to keep track I'm making a books thread 😊. Here goes:
Week 1. Love, Nina. Funny, irreverent, easy to dip in and out of because it was epistolary. Made me love Nina Stibbe and wish I was in my late teens again. Also lowkey want to be Mary-Kay Wilmers when I grow up.
Week 2. Heartburn, Nora Ephron. In keeping with the funny theme, but also packed a few emotional punches to the gut. Some hilarious observations on 1970s feminism. Not sure why I found it so relatable considering it's about a woman whose husband cheats on her, but I did.
Week 3. Such A Fun Age, Kiley Reid. Explosive, riveting, stunning, absolutely brilliant. Made me question the world and myself. A gripping tour-de-force of the intersecting dynamics of racial and financial privilege, which almost made me skip lunch because I was so engrossed.
Week 4. Exciting Times, Naoise Dolan. Slow at first but sped through towards the end. Enjoyed the plot & nuances of the relationships within it. Sometimes found the protagonist's observations insightful, sometimes less so. A talented writer - would def read her next novel.
Week 5. Earthed by Rebecca Schiller (thank you so much to @eandtbooks for the advance copy!). An atmospheric and moving memoir which speaks truths about connecting to nature and how, no matter where you move to, you can't escape from yourself. Out in May - would recommend!
Week 6. Mindset by Dr Carol S. Dweck. A friend sent this to me after a conversation about what personal growth means in your 20s. It's a brilliant, insightful book and it has honestly changed my perspective on the concepts of talent and intelligence. Read to feel inspired.
So I’ve given up on the weeks because...lockdown 3. But I will keep numbering them.
Lockdown vibes really killed my reading buzz for a while there so a book a week went out the window but your girl is back on it so here's a new pinned tweet for this thread: 2021 BOOKS đŸ“šđŸ§”
7. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue: believe the hype. This book is exactly as good as everyone says it is. It's so good I gave myself travel sickness reading it in the car but I didn't care. Beautiful, life-affirming, a masterclass in narrative construction. Loved it. 10/10.
