Finished my first book of 2021. Wow that ending... Thank you @TeachMsHolt and @feelinmyshelf
2nd book of 2021 and such a run read!! I will always pre-order any of @writerkmc books immediately! Especially since she sent me an ARC of One of Us is Next on a day I needed it more than she will ever know!
It’s not often anymore I can finish a book in a day, but I couldn’t put this down! @AlanGratz the problem is I always want to add all your books into my curriculum!
Book 4! The Vanishing Half - such a good read! I adore stories about generations of families and this one was so complex and sad and fulfilling all at once. And I’m obsessed with the cover art.
Book 5: I have had They Both Die at The End by @AdamSilvera for awhile and glad I finally got around to reading it. Just wow... but I want more! Sequel???
Book 6: I love all of @RuthWareWriter books and One by One was just as fun!
Book 7: I was basically unable to read in 2020 so I’m way behind on my stack. Odd Man Out by Nic Stone
Book 8: Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline. Loved the John Hughes bits.. need to know more about Prince apparently!
Book 9: my first ever graphic novel and it was so so good! A story that is forever relevant and that every American should know. The devastating history of Japanese internment is too often left out of school curriculum. They Called Us Enemy by @GeorgeTakei
Book 10: I bought this when #cleartheair had a twitter chat but didn’t get to join in. I’m happy to have read out but wish there was a book club to discuss all of this. Just an amazing history book.
Book 11: Anger is a Gift. I love that is takes place in Oakland and included so many local places. Really connected this book to the protests this summer.
Book 12: finished this amazing read by @AdamHDomby All about how the Confederacy was always racist, lying, cowards and pretty successfully destroyed the truth with their own narrative all to maintain white supremacy. Lots of jfc moments in here...
Book 13: Long Way Down by @JasonReynolds83 This one has been on my shelf way too long and I finally grabbed it! Couldn’t put it down seriously! Finished it in one sitting.
Book 14: Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed. It was a #GRA book but I never got a chance to read it. My daughter’s class is going to read it this year so I thought perfect timing!
Book 15: I finished this beast by Toni Adeyemi. It’s not usually my go to genre but I really loved it and can’t wait to start the next in the series! Thanks so much @blkteachergriot for sending them to me!
Book 16: I am really sad to be leaving this world Adeyemi created, and I can’t wait to go back!
Book 17: Ground Zero by @AlanGratz who works his magic again. I was a second year teacher on 9/11. My brother lived a block away from the WTC. Even 20 years later this story hit hard. Maybe even harder looking back at the damage our response has caused.
Book 18: I am obsessed with the structure of this book. So many wonderfully written essays and poems. Powerful. I need others to read this because I want to talk favorite parts, writings and learnings! #400souls
Book 19: Mexican Gothic - I can’t wait for my friend @ABTV to make an awesome tv show out of this fun and spooky novel!
Book 20: The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. I was never a fan of Jane Eyre, but this modern retelling was a total page-turner! Really couldn’t put it down! @LadyHawkins
Book 21: I was so looking forward to finally reading this book but I struggled through the whole thing. I totally get why it’s beloved, but it just wasn’t for me at this time.
Book 22: this graphic novel by @JerryCraft was the perfect read after a lot of intense books. And such a great rev for middle school! I need to pick up Class Act!
Book 23: This book about the Dust Bowl (a topic I am fascinated by) is so contemporary in its themes. From climate change, treatment of migrant workers, unions, discrimination, the purpose of government... it feels like reading a book that could take place today.
Book 24: Mediocre. @IjeomaOluo is such a bad ass! This book... This book is just... everything. If you read a non-fiction book this year, make it this one.
Book 25: Shipped by @Angie_Hockman What a delightfully fun novel! Perfect read for an escape. And now I want to go to the Galapagos more than ever!
Book 26: Caste by @Isabelwilkerson A remarkable study of the caste system in India, Nazi Germany and America. My conclusion is that the American caste system is so embedded and silent, many don’t see it. This books brings it to the forefront brilliantly.
Book 27: Concrete Rose by Angie Thomas. This prequel to The Hate You Give is great. It’s nostalgia is captivating in both the time and the characters. The whole book is just so well done!
Book 28: The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena. What a fun thriller with tons and tons of twists. Very Fargo-esque.
Book 29: We Do This ‘Til We Free Us by Mariame Kaba. I have been wanting to learn more about PIC abolitionism and I am so happy that this book is available. It really helped me to look at the idea of harm and justices or that harm in a totally new way. @prisonculture
Book 30: The Burning by @MeghaMaj. A gut punch for sure. Once again obsessed with cover art.
Book 31: The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble. I enjoyed this book about a bunch of middle aged British women and their lives for a year. Got some good book recs from it and it was very relatable. Now I wasn’t to start my own reading group!
Book 33: The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste. This took a bit for me to get into but then it exploded! The allusion to slave ships was so powerful. Definitely a good pick for the Global Read Aloud #GRA21
Book 34: The Babysitter. I really enjoyed the structure of this book which alternates between a narrative and journalism. A great look at the world in the late 60s.
Book 35: I can not rave enough about this book! Each story left me wanting so much more. I’m not sure my favorite but I remember loving JD Salinger’s Nine Stories but this is so much better! @daniellevalore
Book 36: The Windsor Knot. I like murder mysteries a lot. This one was okay. Definitely an interesting idea to make the Queen a super sleuth.
Book 37: Furia. I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. (Soccer is not my sport.) Shows you good writing beats out everything! Another great book cover as well. @YamileSMendez
Book 38: The Little Shop in Cornwall. Perfect vacation book in the beautiful setting of Red Rocks Canyon State Park.
Book 39: Someone We Know. My second book by this author and I am becoming a big fan! Would love to see this become a mini-series. Very Big Little Lies.
Book 40: Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam. This book was probably one of the most terrifying books I have ever read. In a good way, but holy shit that was scary!
