Antisemitism in Latin America:

[Thread]
The purpose of this thread is to show some of the most important cases of antisemitism in Latin America. It's especially directed to Non-Latinoamerican Jews.

It's important to learn the history of the Jews everywhere and to understand that antisemitism it’s a global problem.
I also want to clarify that this thread it's only for people to know the main events and to do some more research for themselves. I'm going to leave some articles and links I recommend reading at the end of it.
🇻🇪 VENEZUELA: On multiple occasions, president Hugo Chavez made antisemitic comments. More than once he used the figure of the “Wandering Jew” and he even claimed he “Cursed Israel from his guts”.
Members of his party were openly antisemitic, like Adel El Zabayar, who claimed that Hitler just killed the progressive Jews and that his main financier was the Zionist movement.
In 2009, during the 2009 Gaza conflict, an armed group entered the synagogue Tiferet Israel in Caracas, filling it with antisemitic graffiti, holding the security guards’ hostages and profaning the Torah of the synagogue.
🇨🇱 CHILE: The Jewish community in Chile it's made of about 15000 members. This community is one of the most attacked in the world.

There is a strong Palestinian diaspora in the country, making antisemitic organizations like BDS extraordinarily strong.
The Palestinian Federation of Chile has shared antisemitic content on its main page. They have shared blood libels and even denied the existence of a Jewish nation.
The Wissental center named Daniel Jaude, mayor of Recoleta, as one of the biggest antisemites in the 2020. This important politician has claimed that members of the Jewish community are foreign agents, or that the Jews control the media.
For more information about the antisemitism of Jaude I recommend this thread: https://twitter.com/juanadiazchile/status/1346187474561855488

Also, In October 2020 there was a Neo-Nazi demonstration in Las Condes, Santiago, the capital of Chile.
🇦🇷 ARGENTINA: The Jewish community in Argentina is the biggest one in Latin America. Its size and complexity deserve a whole thread, but here I'm going to show the biggest antisemitic events in the country.
On the 17 of May 1992, a terrorist attack was committed against the Israel embassy in Buenos Aires. A suicide bomber impacted a car filled with explosives at the front of the embassy. In the attack 4 Israeli and 20 Argentinian civilians died.
On the 18 of July 1994, the AMIA building was bombed in a suicide attack. 85 innocent people died in the bombing, and to this day no one has been declared guilty of this crime. If you want to learn more about the AMIA bombing I recommend this video:
🇨🇴 COLOMBIA: I couldn't end this thread without talking about Colombia, the country I live in.

During the 1930 decade, many Jews escaped from the Nazis in Europe. Colombian antisemitic restrictions for immigration allowed only 6000 Jews to enter.
This is a very small number compared to countries like Argentina or Brazil, which let in more than 20.000.

This happened because of the antisemitic ideas of the chancellor of the moment, Luis Lopez De Mesa. He claimed that Jews "Had a parasitic orientation of life"
More than 150000 Jews from Europe asked for a Visa to emigrate to Colombia. But most of them had to stay in Europe and perish in the hands of Hitler.

Only those that had come before the restrictions, like my family, could make it.
In 1942, led by the important politician Laureano Gomez, there was an attempt of a plebiscite with the purpose of expelling Jews from the country.

In 1946 there was a Boycott in Bogotá to the Jewish stores. Businesses were vandalized and some Jews were beaten.
More recently, in 2019, the Menorah monument in the City of Bogotá was vandalized with a swastika.
Antisemitism is real. It's a global problem that we should all know and fight. And the first thing we can do to fight against it is to educate ourselves.
