The types of advisors as depicted through Disney characters: a thread.

The Cheshire Cat. This advisor perpetuates the toxic academic culture and justifies it by saying, “this is just how academia is.” Also will disappear when you need help. 0/10

Sebastian. The advisor that is biased towards research and talks down about teaching or non-academic/industry jobs. 2/10

Owl. The older advisor who is really established and knowledgeable, but can be a *tad* narcissistic at times. 4/10

The Queen from Snow White. The advisor who seems really supportive at first, but turns out to be pretty toxic. -10/10

Rafiki. The advisor who is there to give you a reality check and lift you up when you start to doubt yourself/imposter syndrome sets in. 10/10

The old man from Aristocats. This one is self explanatory 3/10

The strong female advisor who sets an example for women in academia. 13/10

The asshole grasshopper from Bug’s Life. These advisors expect you to do all of the crap work all of the time and give you 0 credit. Just no. -13/10

Dory. This advisor ALWAYS forgets what you talked about in your last meeting 5/10

Genie. The advisor who has your back + helps communicates a healthy work/life balance. All around great. 12/10

Flora, Fauna & Merryweather. Advisors who share/have dual grad students. They’re great until they disagree 6/10

I had to do another one from Alice in Wonderland b/c grad school feels like a crazy place

Rabbit from Alice. The advisors who mean well, but are always scatterbrained. 4/10

Mushu. The advisor who worries way too much about your work so you end up comforting them (in some ways this shows they really care) 1/10

Merlin. Advisors who are just a mixed bag 5/10

Robin Hood. The advisor who would rather give credit to the hard working grad students than only his/her self. 11/10

Mary Poppins. The advisor who is ON POINT and we all aspire to be some day. 9/10

Roz. These advisors are a...little bit scary when you mess up...also they never smile 0/10

Gus Gus & Jacques. The advisors that even when things get tough, they are there for you and see you for the king/queen that you are! +14/10

This thread was all in good fun of course! All advisors are unique and have certain traits that they bring to the table. Hopefully we can all try to be the best advisors we can be! And to the toxic af advisors just stop. Thank you. Angry grad out!
