The questions around vaccination in India tells me that the plan of reducing Indian institutions to nothing has come to fruition. When the dust settles, history would count this bulldozing of the institutions might be the biggest harm this government does to the democracy. /1
Democracy is an act of building institutions like policing and judiciary that interact with the average human with decency and without biases. What strongmen leaders do is to keep pushing inst to the ground so that the people have no avenues left but the supreme leader. /2
We failed to develop proper democratic temperament, we are an electoral democracy where people vote but democracy goes much deeper than that.
The reason to me seems, after '47 power transferred to those who already had all structural powers without any churn or consequences./3
The strange outcome of having no faith in institutions in India is that an act of instant decision making is seen as act of institutional efficiency therefore capital punishment by SC on filmsy evidence or police encounters are celebrated in the society as victory. /4
A society losing faith in democracy and democratic institutions is inevitably predisposed toward conspiracy theories and breakdown of interpersonal faith too. The vaccine reaction, farmers protests etc are all examples of that. /end
