Spear is one of the best zone beating plays
If the defense locks on the X in trips, then the deep cross from the trips side should get open
If the defense locks on the X in trips, then the deep cross from the trips side should get open
If they play straight zone than they should get overloaded
Here are a bunch of reps of the Chiefs running it https://alexbyrne.substack.com/p/the-chiefs-spear-concept">https://alexbyrne.substack.com/p/the-chi...
Can be very effective against man too
If the defense likes to undercut crossing routes (like the Patriots did against the Chiefs) then it would be better to run it with a designed rub like on the following play, which is very popular around the NFL
Essentially a deep mesh

I think a good general rule is that 80% of your plays should be good against 80% of coverages, instead of calling lots of designer/beater plays or something you saw some other team have success with once
So many different formations, protections, play fakes, and underneath routes that you can run it with
Similar to Lincoln Riley’s shallow and up concept

Crossing route concepts can work great when the defense is matching to one side but not the other

Good job by the defense to defend the underneath crosser
