Why Tammy Abraham's multi-faceted skillset makes him such a unique player: a short thread with video.
So, Tammy Abraham scores lots of goals. He scored them at youth level, he scored them in the Championship, and he's scoring them now at the top level at quite a remarkable level when you consider that he hasn't taken a single penalty for Chelsea. https://twitter.com/SkySportsStatto/status/1341140402666127363?s=20
However, aside from being such a prolific goalscorer, there are many other things that Tammy brings to the table as Chelsea's number nine that Olivier Giroud & Timo Werner don't. This isn't a slight on either of those two by any means, it's just pure appreciation of Tammy's game.
Particularly last season in a disjointed Chelsea side, Tammy led the line so well simply by being such a nightmare for defenders. CBs are so used to defending against strikers his size in a certain way that they don't know what to do when they realise how mobile & skilful he is.
This season, with the arrival of three big-money attackers, Tammy has evolved into more of a point centre. No doubt learning from Olivier Giroud, Tammy has focused on being a focal point for all the other attackers to play off, improving in his composure and back-to-goal play.
Despite this adaptation, Tammy is still averaging over 0.5 npxG per 90 this season, only a slight decrease on last term. His shot map looks how you would expect it to, with the vast majority of shots being taken from the centre of the penalty area. https://twitter.com/stighefootball/status/1331607836892278784?s=20
Despite primarily being a goalsman, and this season a linkman, there are other strong features of Tammy's game that cannot be discounted. He is excellent at making intelligent decoy runs, is a great presser and can be dangerous with his dribbling and crossing from wide areas.
So, to come back to the overall point: in yesterday's game against West Ham, Tammy showed glimpses of multiple different sides of his varied skillset that makes him so unique.
Both his goals were one-touch finishes, but he was instrumental in linking defence to attack in the buildup of both moves. He produced some lovely touches to bring his teammates into play, created a great chance for Werner and was a clear focal point, all against a low block.
There are still areas of Tammy's game that could do with much improvement, in particular his heading, but if his recent willingness to adapt and greatly develop his hold-up play is anything to go by then I'm sure we will see it happen. It's easy to forget that he's still only 23!
First time I’ve ever done something like this; quite simplistic but I’m happy with it. Feedback appreciated! :)
