Sundarar life
Part one

Let's see sundarar life in many threads as it is impossible to contain it in single thread.his life was miraculous one and it gives immense joy to bhaktas while reading .He sang so many beautiful poems on shiva and his life story is in Periya puranam

During samudra manthan when Hala Hala poison came out Shiva held it in in cup before drinking. he saw his glorious form in the poison and called. A glorious person came out of poison Shiva name him Alabama sundara. He became friend of Shiva

once in a garden of kailash sundara saw anaithinai and kamalini friends of parvati
He attracted towards them.They too attracted towards him. Shiva saw this and blessed three of them to go to Earth and enjoy worldly life and ding him in his kshetra and return back as he wished .

Sundar bon in in thiruvarur to sadayanar and isaigyaniar couples. He grown up as a handsome young man is marriage was fixed. Celebration was all around.

But shiva decided to play with sundarar

Part 2
Sundarar parents had decided to marry sundarar and  seek the daughter of SandaiKavi shivacharya when marriage was about to take place an old man with Sacred ash smeared all over his body came and stop the marriage he said Sundarar is his bondslave and he cannot marry.

Sundar got very angry and she scoffed old man calling him pithan(madman).Old man said sundarar grandfather aruran pledged sundarar as his bondslave and he has palmscript with him in tiruvennainallur.
Sundarar asked him to show proof.he said he will show in assembly of panchayat

Panchayat Assembly began.old man showed palmmansucript which he said written by sundarar grandfather. it validated old man claims. Panchayat ruled in favour of old man and asked sundarar to accept it as gods will.sundarar doesn't know what to do.

Old man dragged sundarar at thiru arul thurai temple at tiruvennainallur And old man vanished inside garbha Griha.Sundarar suprised then he saw lord Shiva with maa Parvati sitting on Nandi .lord reminded him of his previous birth and said him to sing the songs in his praise.

Lord said sundarar will be called as vanthondan (fierce servant)as he violently argued with him.When sundarar asked what to sing in first line Shiva told to sing with word pitha as he called him pitha duringarguments.

Part 3
Sundarar and his travels
Sundarar went to many sthalas and sang verses.when he reached thiru vadigai atemple worshipped by apparhe didn't enter city afraid to keep his feet on sacred land dué to his reverrence to appar.he stayed in a mutt near to it and slept

Shiva came as old man and slept near sundarar placing his feet on sundarar head.Sundarar objected and oldman asked sorry. Sundarar went to adjacent room same thing happened. And this repeated multiple times.When sundarar asked old man about identity he said I'm your friend

and disappeared laughingly .Sundarar know now it was Shiva.He sang song in meaning your feet cannot be touched easily by those even who follows Vedas and agamas but you kept your feet on my head.he then visited Chidambaram.he went in samadhi state in seeing gopuram itself.

He sang verses happily in Chidambaram.this is pancha bhuta temple consecrated by Shri Patanjali Rishi. here nataraja dancing form of Shiva is worshipped.then he went to thiruvarur as lord asked him to come .Shiva ordered Brahmins at thiruvarur to recieve his friend warmingly

Part 4
Sundarar marriage with paravayar and rain miracle at thirupunkur

When Sundarar reached tiruvatur lord said you will be called as thambiran thozhar meaning friend of God then Shiva told sundarar will be in bridegroom dress always.kamalini born as paravaiyar.

she was Shiva Devotee too.sundarar saw paravaiyar and fell in love with her .she too fell in love with sundarar.b oth worshipped Shiva and sought his help.
Shiva appeared in both parents dream and ordered their marriage.marriage was held grandly with Shiva Parvati blessings

Thirupunkoor city was in severe drought king went and asked sundarar for rain.sundarar agreed but asked king to give 12 acres of land to Shiva temple.king agreed sundarar requested Shiva and rain came. now there was another problem that is flood .king request sundarar again

and sundarar asked king to submit another 12 acres to temples and he sang verses again to stop the rain. rain stopped and temple too became grand one.shiva loved sundarar songs.he did many miracles to show his love for his sakhya bhakta Shri sundarar

Part 5
Thiruthondar thogai
Song on life of Shiva devotees

Once sundarar was in Thiruvarur he went to Thyagaraja temple.he didn't notice statue of shiv Bhaktas in manadapa outside.seeing this viranmeendar a Shiva devotee got very angry and he couldn't tolerate this

Viran meendar said sundarar who disrespectful to devotees and Shiva who gave him darshan still at his act both were not one among us.Shiva came with Parvati to pacify viranmeendar.sundarar realised his mistake and want to sing in the name of devotees.shiva gave him first verse

Sundarar sung thiruthonda thogai .it was poem of other earlier nayanmars.
it became basis of Sri Periya Purana wrote by sekkizhar.

Part 6
Heap of grain
Kundiyur kilar rich merchant supplied sundarar grains and rice for his daily needs. drought hit thiruvarurur.kilar too got affected he couldn't supply sundarar.
He was very sad at this and Shiva was moved by this devotion.

Shiva ordered is gana To fill kilar house with heap of grain.they did so kilar suprised want to tell sundarar this miracle shiva also informed sundarar .both met midway.sundarar said shiva to remove poverty of whole thiruvarur and transport grains to every house.

Shiva ordered and ganas filled every house with grains .drought was removed
Everybody was thanking sundarar and his wife

Gifting of gold miracle
Paravayar had habit of doing charity every panguni uthiram. So sundarar asked Shiva he sing in praise of Shiva.shiva decided to play

Shiva granted him 12000 coins of gold .Sundarar asked how to carry Shiva told to drop it in manimuttharu and take at thiruvarur .Sundarar held one coin for identification.he done so but couldn't find gold he again sang a verse and found out gold coins but of less quality

he again sang some verse and Shiva restored original quality. Thus was friendship between Shiva and sundarar.
One more time when he want gold he asked Shiva Shiva turned bricks sundarar slept in to gold. mahadev shiva behaved like a true friend to sundarar

Part 7

Shiva Removing hungry of his friend

Once sundarar on a pilgrimage and was very hungry , old brahmin came and took to his hut and fed him and his group sumptuous meal.after eating old man with hut vanished sundarar realised it's Shiva and sang in his greatness

he was hungry on another ocassion sundarar sat in a corner of house Shiva as old man came and he enquired him then he went house to house begging collected food gave to sundarar and vanished sundarar praised this in his verses too that mahadev begged for him.such was Shiva love

Part 8
Remembrance if tempkes
Once sundarar forget to visit malapadi temple.lord said malapadi Vara maranthanyo means did you forget malapadi temple ? sundarar remember and went to malapadi temple and sang the lord.this was temple where Nandi marriage taken place

another time when sundarar forgot nearby temple Shiva as old man sundarar came enquired about Chidambaram temple way but old man showed direction of that temple sundarar forgotten and vanished
Sundarar remembered shivas mercy and sang his glory

Part 9
Marriage with sangliyar
Sundarar came to Thiruvottiyur to worship Sri Thyagaraja temple. It was ancient and famous one with many puranic legends.anaithinai parvathis friend born as Sangli Devi and she was Shiva Devotee.sundarar saw her and fell instantly in love with her.

shiva appeared in dream and said to sangli to marry his friend.she asked Shiva what if sundarar deserted her as he was married man.shiva told her to ask promise of not leaving Thiruvottiyur in front of shiv ling. sundarar afraid to put vow infront of Shiva lingam told Shiva

He told Shiva to be in tree for a day of his marriage.shiva hinted Sangli to take marriage in front of magila tree. sundarar has no way agreed and marriage taken place grandly.they lived happy life.
Thiruvottiyur temple still has that tree standing in remember of this event

Part ten
Shiva the supreme judge
Sundarar once got remember of thiruvarur Thyagaraja his famous deity .He couldn't control himself .He forgot promise made to sangliyar and he crossed Thiruvottiyur.the moment he lost both eyesight and fell on the ground unconscious.

He regained his consciousness.He cried but no use. Be it friend or Foe in terms of judgement Shiva is very unbiased judge.
He cried and  asked forgiveness. no use .but he decided to go to thiruvarur anyway.with help of people he stood and continue his journey

Part eleven
Restoring eyesight
Sundarar with help of people reached thirumullaivayiland sang verses.he sang verses in thiruvembakkam and asked whether Shiva is here. and Shiva gave him stick and said I'm here and you go.this indifference pained him.he went to Kanchi

and prayed to Shiva and Parvati both.he prayed to ever compassionate sri kamakshi mata.parvati was moved by his prayer.sundarar got one eyesight with maa Parvati intervention.then he rolled down profusely in tears .he stayed there for some days. He then went to thiruvadhuturai.

Then he proceeded to thiruturthi . Here Shiva ordered him to dip in northern tank and when he did his whole body turned to glittering like gold. all were suprised.
He reached thiruvarur asked forgiveness to Shiva.shiva moved by this restored both eyesight.he joyfully sang there

Part 12
Mahadev Shiva became love messenger for friend

News reached paravayar about sundarar reaching city also his other marriage.she was very angry.sundarar knowing this prayed to friend Shiva.mahadev the highest god became messenger of love and went to pacifty paravayar

Shiva went as old brahmin.paravayar didn't recognise Shiva.then she felt very bad for not recognise him then Shiva came in his real form and spoken on behalf of his Friend.paravayar pacified and united with sundarar.sundarar lived with both wife happily.

kotpuli nayanar chief of chola king want to marry both of his daughter with sundarar.he said he will accept his daughters as his own daughters and blessed them.

Eyarkon kalikamar
This angered another great devotee who was angry with Mahadeva as messenger of love.he hate sundarar

Shiva decided to unite both.kakikamar developed strong stomach pain.
sundarar went to cure him.but kalikamar decided to end his life instead of curing by sundarar.sundarar sad by this incident decide to take his own life too.shiva with Parvati appeared saved both and made friends

Part 13
Cheraman Perumal
Cheraman peruman was a chera king. He was great devotee of Shiva. Shiva made him sure the heard the sounds of his dancing daily. after hearing that only he eats his lunch.Shiva decided to make friends of his both devotees cheraman perumal and sundarar.

One day cheraman perumal didn't hear sounds of anklet of shiva.he was very worried.He wept in front of Shiva and asked any mistake he done.Shiva said he didn't do any mistakes and he was meeting his friend sundarar hence he couldn't made sound of his anklets.

cheraman Perumal was astonished by this.he went to see sundarar and both became thick friends in no time.Sundarar stayed in cheraman perumal palace. he gifted sundarar with many precious gifts. both travelled together many Shiva sthalas.

Part 14
King of miracles
Sundarar reached avinashi he saw in agraharam two houses facing each other. one house was grand celebration and in other house was crying.sundarar enquired and he found both house families were friends their children too friends

and while they were playing near pond crocodile eaten one child 4 years ago. now that child has grown and his upanayanam being taking place this house was in somber mood.Sundarar very angry and sad taken the family along with him in the pond and sang verses on shiva .

Crocodile came and it opened mouth. boy who was eaten 4 years ago came as 8 years old boy and all were amazed.sundarar did upanayanam to that boy too.that famous temple is still there in avinashi which recorded this miraculous incident

Part 15
Perumilai kurumbar
He was great devotee of sundarar he chanted his name and got all Siddhis and became yogi too. he knows sundarar decided to going to Kailash by his yoga siddhi .he sat in samadhi reached Shiva even before sundarar.

Part 16
Sundarar return to kailash
Sundarar with cheraman Perumal went to many places . Finally reached at thiruvanchikalam. sundarar was very bored with worldly life .He decided to return to Kailash. he sang verses.lord shiva sent airavata indras elephant.

when sundarar reached out of temple airavata was waiting for him.sundarar with both wife went and sat on airavata elephant .Indra king of gods fanned him and held umbrella.Sundarar reaching Kailash all the way joyfully greeted by rishis and Devas.

cheraman Perumal too wish to go to Kailash. he chanted panchaksara to horse ears his horse too fly in sky to Kailash. at Kailash sundarar  reached shivas abode and entered but cheraman Perumal didn't able to enter as Nandi stopped him.

but at sundarar intervention Shiva allowed him. both were became head of ganas.sundarar wives became maa Parvathi friends as before. Sundarar sang verses on way to Kailash which was recorded by Shri varuna God of water and gave to devotees.
