This is a great post but I want to expand upon it using references because I think people don’t understand often enough why Harry might be really really annoyed by now by the pressure to ‘come out‘ via journalists who don’t take him at his word. https://t.co/vTgS0YN7Db
Harry was first interrogated about his sexuality all the way back in 2013 in GQ. I do mean literally cornered - the interviewer was not supposed to talk to him alone. Harry specifically answered that he was “pretty sure” he was not bisexual but did not say he was straight.
In November 2014, Harry became a little chaotic in a One Direction “Fourplay” interview where he says female is “not that important” as a trait in a sexual partner.
It is notable that by 2015, discussions of ‘queerbaiting’ started to arise even as the media was prying to his personal life. For example, look at these contrasting nextnownext articles from 2014 and 2015.

In the first, nextnownext is implying that his statement is a coming out statement. In the second, less than one year later, nextnownext is treating him as an ally. As we shall see, this is a recurring pattern - saying he came out, only to later ignore it.
Harry basically disappeared for most of 2016. In May 2017, Harry was asked about his sexuality by The Sun. He responded that he never felt the need to label himself.
Even after being asked so many times, Harry was still being accused of or suspected of queerbaiting. Note this 2017 article in Buzzfeed in which the author speculates exactly that https://www.buzzfeed.com/graceeperry/why-are-so-many-queer-women-obsessed-with-harry-styles
In March 2018, Harry released his new song Medicine in which he states “the boys and the girls are in/I mess around with them (or him, depending upon how you hear it)/and I’m okay with it.” This is reported on as a coming out https://www.capitalfm.com/artists/harry-styles/news/coming-out-song-bisexual-medicine/
Mere days after the song’s release in March 2018 Harris Reed spoke on Medicine in an interview with Paper Magazine, saying they hoped that the song would convince people to leave Harry alone about his sexuality. https://www.papermag.com/harry-styles-harris-reed-designer-2549872586.html
A couple of months later in 2018, The Independent published an article accusing Harry of gaybaiting. https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/rita-ora-bisexual-girl-video-gay-bait-lgbt-rights-social-media-a8352646.html
In 2019, promotion for Harry’s new album cycle started. The first (and politest) publication that asked him about his sexuality was Rolling Stone. He does not call himself straight & in the article a friend suggests Harry dates women and men. https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/harry-styles-cover-interview-album-871568/
The second publication that asked him was The Face, published in September 2019 (RS was in August). https://theface.com/music/harry-styles-feature-interview-music-stevie-nicks-elton-john-alessandro-michele-volume-4-issue-001
Backtracking to 2018 - forgot two important details. In Minneapolis, Harry pointed specifically at himself during ‘the boys and the girls are in/I mess around with them.’ In Washington on June 24, Harry mouthed ‘Happy Pride’ after the line.
October 2019 at midnight on Coming Out Day. Harry posts the video “Lights Up” in which he is seen dancing sensually with men and women as well as wearing androgynous clothing. Again, this is reported on as “fans think Harry is coming out” https://www.seventeen.com/celebrity/music/a29441076/harry-styles-lights-out-lyrics-meaning/
November 2019. Bitch Media posts an article accusing Harry of queerbaiting and calls him “likely straight” https://www.bitchmedia.org/article/is-harry-styles-queer-complexity-of-queerbaiting
December 2019. The Guardian. A reporter asks him about his sexuality and accuses him of queerbaiting. Harry, understandably, comes about as close as he’ll probably ever come to telling the interviewer to fuck off. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/dec/14/harry-styles-sexual-ambiguity-dating-normals-rocking-a-dress
November 2020. In response to Harry’s dress controversy, Dazed accuses him of queering heterosexuality and calls him a publicly straight white man. https://www.dazeddigital.com/fashion/article/51147/1/harry-styles-vogue-december-cover-dress-gender-fluid-gucci-tyler-mitchell
The facts are that Harry has made it clear over and over that he doesn’t feel like talking about his sexuality with journalists but that he’s into women and men. The public forgets that he’s queer about once a year and acts like he’s never spoken about his sexuality before.
Harry is not queer for money or as a fad. He is framed as sexually ambiguous by people who think they are owed information about his personal life. People want the headline that Harry Styles has come out as a certain label and he refuses to put himself in a box for them.
Treating Harry as straight just because he doesn’t feel like laying out his entire sexual history for journalists is gross. It’s heterosexist and biphobic. He has talked about it enough times to be allowed some exasperation when receiving the question.
If Harry ever chooses to label his sexuality then good for him. But he has given us enough information for us to place him under the wide queer umbrella and for publications to be accused of queerphobia by labeling him straight. He is not up for debate.
Audacious indeed! https://twitter.com/karinerry/status/1337853887114522624
