So Far Away - A thread explaining this meaningful song and why Yoongi is a genius.

When it comes to personal songs like So Far Away, Yoongi prefers to be blunt and be harsh about the realities of life and he specifically highlighted this in the song. The reason he does this is to demonstrate how he understands these feelings and to share his own experience +

but only so that we know we’re not alone and in this way he gives us hope through his music (which is one of the main reasons why he started it).

So Far Away talks about not having a dream and it touches the reality when it mentions how people kept saying ‘if you go to university, everything will be alright.’ There’s this idea within society that university is one of the best/most important experience in life.

But this is useless if you do not having anything you wish to pursue. This then leads to despair and people ‘living’ because they ‘can’t die.’

Yoongi repeatedly says ‘Everyone’s running, but why am I the only one here?’ The third time he mentions it, it’s as if he’s talking to himself. Everyone is running to a future, that path that they’re on. The future being university, or marriage and such.

It creates the image that Yoongi is all alone while everyone is leaving him. This is because he’s unsure of what to do. If he wants to pursue music, it is a risky move, especially when he had no one supporting his dream of music (his family and teachers disapproved).

Moreover, Yoongi may be asking why he’s the only one here which could suggest that he thinks there’s something wrong with him for not running as well.

The second and third verse talks about the effect of this and it becomes more personal as he talks about his despair and loneliness as everyone ran away, leaving him alone. He feels unimportant and ‘abandoned’ and starts to think that he truly only has himself.

Although Yoongi has addressed the depressing emotions he feels, he also intended to provide hope to people who felt exactly how he did.

When he says ‘I will be there for your creation until the end of life’, he is saying he will stay by your side. This could be because he felt so alone and had no one; he would’ve wanted someone to be with him so he is saying to those who feel like this that they’re not alone, +

because they have him.

Yoongi also reassured the listeners by saying that everything will turn out great for you after all the hardships in order to give hope to those people. This verse is mentioned repeatedly throughout the song.

Yoongi intentionally mentioned his own feelings in order for people to relate and therefore, it is much more valid and meaningful when he is reassuring you that everything will be fine because he understands how you feel.

(side note): In the Jin and Jungkook version, Jungkook repeatedly says ‘First Love’ which could hint at how Yoongi’s dream is music (as first love talks about his relationship with the piano since he was a child), but this dream is repressed due to society discouraging him;

especially as Korea is highly competitive and you’re expected to get a high paying job (which a career in music doesn’t promise as it is risky) after slaving away to school for many years.
