Completed Umineko Episode 5 and it was absolutely fantastic. Battler, Natsuhi and Erika were really great, we get to learn more about how the meta world works which helps us solve the mystery, and goddamn, that final chapter was easily the peak of the series so far. Didn't think-
I'd ever say this, even though he's always been very good, Battler was actually probably the highlight of this episode. Not only are there a lot of interesting parallels between him and Kinzo that I could dig into, but at the end of the episode, Battler solved it.
He solved the mystery, he understood Beatrice. And, it is because he realised the value of love. Love is required to know the Truth. Yeah, that ???? chapter was quite easily the peak of the series so far.
Battler at his very best, a thematic encapsulation of so much of what Umineko has been telling us for so long, and hype as hell. But, it was also a message to the reader, something that I specifically, needed to hear.
I’ve always been a bit unsure if Umineko will be able to pull it all of and make it all work, worried I'll be underwhelmed by the answers, but in a way, I lacked love. I need to trust Ryukishi, trust that he has put enough clues for me to be able to make sense of it all,
just as he trusts me that I am trying to do just that. It’s a mutual trust between the author and the reader. The message works on two levels, story-wise and meta wise. Kinda neat.
Natsuhi already had her spotlight in EP 1, but I wasn’t satisfied with what we got from her there, so I was glad we got another go at her, and man oh man, we got a lot out of her this time.
Her mental state, her complicated but sincere love for Krauss, her intense pride of being part of the Ushiromiya family, her sin, and what she went through during this game. It’s difficult not to condemn her for that sin all those years ago, but at the same time
she’s a very complex and sympathetic individual, so I do care for her and think she deserves better. It’s difficult, but she’s great throughout this episode.
We were introduced to a new character in this episode as well, Bern’s piece, Erika, who in a way reminds me of Ange, in the sense that she’s obsessed with finding out the truth, but the difference is that she’s taken this to the absolute negative extreme.
I don’t know about her backstory or context yet, but she’s kinda forced into this role as a detective, whether she likes it or not, though she does seem to quite like it to a degree, but if she fails at it, unimaginable cruel punishment from Bern awaits her.
When she was getting punished for not doing good enough, I had to feel for her, even if she was despicable. Solving the mystery is all she has, but unlike Battler she can’t because she lacks love.
Erika serves as a great meta-commentary as well, as this episode makes it very clear that Umineko is a love letter to detective fiction and Erika embodies the people who are very strict, and that only certain rigid rules decides what makes a good mystery,
and who care more about coldly dissecting the truth, being more concerned about the means, so she works as a great foil to Battler, someone who is more understanding and caring, who is more concerned about understanding the motive, the heart.
Erika doesn't care about anything or anyone besides solving the mystery and she will go to any cruel lengths to do so, but Battler always did everything with love, he didn't want to suspect his family, cause he loved them and cried for them.
This is the especially interesting cause in most detective stories Erika would be the hero, and she does see herself like one, she's solving crimes and putting the cruel witch to death after all, but in the context of this particular story, in Umineko, she's almost the bad guy.
We didn’t get as much out of Beatrice as I would’ve hoped. Don’t get me wrong, she was very good as usual, but we’re over halfway into the series, and I need this next episode to stop with the hints at deeper complexity and actually finally delve into her character.
That’s not to say we didn’t learn anything about her though, her growing relationship with Battler, her sense of honour, how she took on the sins of Natsuhi even though she herself hasn’t committed any of them, which hints at her deeper motivations
about the larger mystery as a whole. She’s good as usual. Quite cute in this episode too. I just need more from her before it's too late lol.
Dlanor is adorable, hilarious with her “desu/death”, and acts as a good personification of Knox’s rules, and offers some interesting commentary on those, but even then, she's not devoid of personality, and is actually very precious, a sweetheart. I enjoy her a lot.
Bernkastel and Lambdadelta were way more active in this episode. It's a cool dynamic that they have, and they almost seem to have switched positions now, with Bern being the more cruel one, and Lambda the more playful, at times helpful one.
Lambda is not really as elegant or subtle with her game as Beatrice, but while not as intricate, still exciting as hell. Lambda shipping Beatrice and Battler is lovely, and her making the pieces act as they do make me in interested in her motivations.
That ???? chapter though. I know I’ve already talked about it a ton, but holy shit. I was screaming, jumping in my seat, literally rocking back and forth, VERY violently, whilst punching my fists in the air continuously. Oh, so good.
This kinda feels like it should've been a question episode though, we didn't get that many answers or super helpful clues, and the episode's climax would've been such a good finale for the question arcs.
Nevertheless, easily one of the best episodes in the series so far. I still prefer EP 4 for its slightly stronger emotional and richer storytelling, but this was almost equally fantastic. Can't wait to see what EP 6 will bring to the table. I'm starting it tomorrow...
