Ok Space Cats! The boiler's just broken so I need to bend the knee to the hegemony of the 1st Law of Thermodynamics & do some work to warm up. And what better work is there than announcing the winners of the #DrawDominicCummingsGoings & #DrawPrincessNutNutsCoatofArms Challenges?
Anyway, just a couple of weeks short of the 1st Anniversary of the very first #Draw... Challenge, launched on 9th December before any of us even knew who Matt Hancock was, this thing's grown into a monster beyond my control. Lost count of how many we've done, but you keep drawing
...so who am I to strangle this mewling brat in its manger? But to business. Some really really nice stuff in these 2 Challenges to capture the moment Mistah Jizz flounced out of Number 10 & into Infamy. After all, this was one of the campest performances since Brexit, and...
..therefore perfectly captured by @jonrob5000 in this evocation of Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard (folowed by my unpublished riff on the same theme from May). Also, a beautiful reverse ferret from the dependably tourettic @SwissRich71 - we salture you!
And in all honesty, this was really a fish in a barrel challenge. Thanks to @foxyslattery @BenChilton @forgiechris & @IamHappyToast for various entirely precise casting of the Great Flounce
...and @ShaneoFontaine @Tweet_Mouse & @wilburdawbarn (who hasn't worked @BeanoOfficial for ages) with a special mention for @VaunEarl's Warholian evocation of Gerhard Richter, an entirely valid entry despite their misgivings about photomontage...
Hell! I'll accept collages of piles of shit, & often have over the past year. Sadly , practically none of those this time, through the Noble Flag of Toilety Humour still flies high thanks to @PaulRRed1 & @Songicartoons , + 2 more entries from the frankly wonderful @REmbroiderer
Raising the tone (but not from the embroidery - that's wrapped round the summit of Olympus), but not too much, are these evocations of the Classics from the great @KJLambcartoons @PastorSauceBoat & a biblical one from @Will_Overman
...with yet more beautifully rendered photomontage work to maks John Heartfield weep with joy, from @JPM06848080 @TommyReckless & @yrotitna
...& what may be a screenprint but is probably digital devilry from @oddlyACTIVE. Back in the realm of DRAWING however (it's on the tin), some beautiful stuff from @Cunningsplan, the ill named @Crap_Portraits & @lightacandleOTM, with almost Thatcher Resignation pathos in the eyes
Only thing wrong with that last one is the fucker swapped his soul for a Pez dispenser decades ago. On we move. This homage to American Gothick from @BCFergs is very satisfying. Likewise this entry from our last winner @BurtOHare, & these from @ChicanePictures & @ChristheBaker
I'm also very pleased to see another entry from @drawinglots - keep doing that Nancy - & some good puppet work from @easycartoons &, rather subtly, @Hennell_Draws, & a Dropping The Pilot allusion from @HopelessSurfer
And of course a nice lot of boxy jobs - these from @MagwitchC @Ybretsae and a special mention for this fantastic drawing from @DanSPeterson with its nod to Schrodinger's Cat (to dredge up one of my late father-in-law's gags, can you shave S's cat with Occam's razor?)
We're getting close to the end here, but I mustn't overlook these, from previous winners @jonesycartoons @joe_ackenbush & @kevinwellsart - all typically brilliant
...or these concise renderings of Domdom from @NayCartoons @nickymonkey and particularly this extraordinary, haunted hommage to the Neue Sachlichkeit from @StephenCliffe3. Also a nice, late Ophthalmologist gag from @mhoulden
and likewise another lovely sub-Peakean offering from @StuDrawings. In fact, most of these could've won. For instance, this Carrie from @isabelshadows is gloriously sinister, & this other entry from @Songicartoons made me laugh out loud
Indeed, while I was planning on 2 separate prizes for each Challenge, this time I'm splitting it 3 ways. Controversial, eh? Will there be walkouts? Who fucking cares? It's my thing and I can do what I like, got me? So, the winner of...
...the #DrawPrincessNutNutsCoatofArms, for actually sticking to the brief apart from anything else, is this piece of decorous filth from @StickyDrawer - exactly as it should be!
And the joint winners of the #DrawDominicCummingsGoings Challenge are, in no particular order in a queue of 2, this lovely narrative arc from @JaseToons & a poignant retelling of the end of Pinocchio, perfectly reflecting the naational mood, from @Chance4321. Made me laugh too.
And there you have it. I hope I haven't missed anyone out, and if I have, I apologise. I'm actually pretty shit at this kind of thing and slogging through these is like peeling sticking plasters off my eyeballs, so consider yourselves blessed by mu indulgence. Two not included...
