Supreme Court on a 5-4 vote has backed Catholic and Jewish religious entities in challenge to New York's coronavirus occupancy restrictions in first consequential vote by Trump appointee Amy Coney Barrett
Barrett and four other conservatives in the majority with Chief Justice Roberts joining three liberals in dissent. Earlier in the year, late Justice Ginsburg joined Roberts and three liberals in the majority in rejecting similar challenges

Roberts notes that the challengers are *not* currently bound by the restrictions in question and says there was therefore no need for the court to decide the issue right now

Justice Sotomayor pointed out that challengers seized up statements NY Gov Cuomo made as a sign of anti-religious bias but that when upholding Trump’s travel ban the conservative justices glossed over his call for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims to the United States”
