Eren's life motto is "we are free since the moment of our birth". So I think that Grisha telling him this as a baby triggered him to pursue freedom.
Some where along the line he lost the true meaning of Grisha's words. https://twitter.com/theAckermanity/status/1331775037485981696
Grisha meant orginally that he was free. That he wouldn't be forcing him to do what he wanted as he did with Zeke. Since freedom is something that a lot of characters get, but always stated by other characters, like Ymir (the 1st King) and Kenny (Rod)... It wouldn't be a surprise
If Grisha was the one telling this to Eren. And also... the contrast to Ymir... she was born as a slave and was never granted freedom. She couldn't change her fate but Eren could. What was the difference? That Eren was raised to be free and G meant it from the bottom of his heart
He WAS already free... the point is he never noticed it. It's also his wish for E, tht he is free and defies fate. Not for the rumbling bt to define his own existence and defy what fate is doing with him right now. This is related to his current mindset abt the unavoidable future
