Bible study discussion thread: this will review in context historically biblical information on shepherds of Hebrew/Abrahamic/Israelite culture, information that may surprise you as it surprised me during my research of the subject
The biblical Hebrew word for Shepherd is raah, and biblical Koine Greek is poimen. Both words are translated into English as shepherd or one who pastors. The@word pastor comes from the Old French word pastur meaning a shepherd
Many of us have grown up with images of shepherds watching over sheep, the shepherds are depicted as cleanly dressed men with long staffs and usually having beards, it is a standard look
Cultural and biblical reality is that most shepherds were young girls and unmarried women then, and still are, as many girls and women across the land descendants of Abraham came to resides at continue to pastor their family sheep
Men definitely were and are shepherds as well, usually being the ones to handle the larger flocks as sheepherders, also called keepers of sheep or herders of sheep, opposed to shepherds, as the flocks graze father from home
A prescient is set for women being identified as shepherds with Rachel the wife of Jacob in Genesis 29:4-9, where in verse 9 the KJV translated raah to says that she kept sheep, where as the NIV translated more direct as Rachel being a shepherd
The Hebrew word raah translated in reference to Rachel keeping sheep is overwhelming translated in the rest of the KJV Bible as shepherd or on a few occasions as being a pastor
Exodus 2:16-17 notes the daughters of the priest of Midian, one daughter becoming the wife of Moses, were shepherds as well, and had a run in with some other shepherds, presumably male since Moses fought them off. Note it was not until near 1400s AD that shepherdess is a word
In the Koine Greek gospels and epistles we see poimen translated as shepherd repeatedly, 16 times, except when it is translated as pastor in Ephesians 4:11. Just like in Hebrew, the Koine Greek had one word for male and females shepherds. Just as teacher can be a man or woman
Discussed previously, although most shepherds were young girls and unmarried women, there were of course male shepherds as well as sheepherders, and culturally there were problems between some of them then as there still are between some men and women in the same role
In general all shepherds, male and female, smelled and were dirty from interacting with sheep from dawn to dusk. Genesis 46:34 says Egyptians call them abominations, disgusting things. Yet, the angel announcing the Messiah invited shepherds to be first to meet our newborn king
When you read, think, or hear about shepherds in a biblical and societal context, remove the singular image of a man with a beard wearing clean clothing, it really can be a young boy or girl or unmarried woman or man, they all are considered shepherds, and pastor certain flocks
And to expand your mind a little further with things you have learned in this thread, read Luke 2:8-20 again envisioning the variables you have discovered. I know the information changed my perspective on what a shepherd biblical is and can be in association with the Word
