Here in El Sereno where activists are trying to prevent the eviction of families from vacant homes owned by CalTrans. CHP is stationed outside ~15 properties.
Minutes after the activists wrapped up a press conference at least 50+ CHP officers in riot gear descend on the homes. You can hear the officer try to stop me filming
CHP is using a battering ram to take down the door
Officers have guns drawn and pointed at the door and windows. They are forcefully pushing activists away from the home, and have cuffed at least one person inside.
Arrests happening now
CHP has just entered another reclaimed home in El Sereno.
CHP is arresting a minor that I spoke to earlier. She had been living in the home with her mother.
B is 17 years old. This afternoon, she gave me a tour of the home that was reclaimed for her and her mother. She told me how excited she was to have her own bedroom for the first time in her life. CHP just knocked down her front door, and currently have her hogtied in the street
Activists are trying to prevent the cars holding the girl and her mom from leaving the street.
The original reclaimers, who now have a legal right to their homes (which you can read about on @LAist), have just come outside, and are telling CHP to arrest them and let the others go.
Just minutes before CHP arrived at the homes, reclaimed Claudia Lara and Janie Hernandez appealed to Gov. Newsom directly, asking him to stop CHP from violently evicting the people in the homes:
That’s ***JANIL Hernandez.
And reclaimers*****
Earlier tonight activists held a press conference and spoke about how CalTrans promised to make the homes available to the community and didn’t. They also shared how terrifying it is to be evicted and begged Gov Newsom for help. CHP is now moving door to door forcing people out.
It’s Thanksgiving morning and CHP is continuing to carry out evictions on previously unoccupied homes owned by CalTrans in El Sereno. Activists Claudia Lara & Janil Hernandez said earlier that they haven’t heard from any local officials, like new city council member @kdeleon
