a dancer’s analysis of ten lee, a thread: 🐱✨
hihi!! i’m eden, a 17 year old dancer of almost 15 years, more than 85% of my life has been dedicated to dancing, and 3 years dedicated to being a fan of ten. this is my analysis of his performing, dancing, movement quality, choreography, etc! ~ ✨🐱
ten choreographed this piece in 2018. he pulls from a mixture of styles, including dancehall, house, and latin influenced movement to create a beautifully juxtaposed piece. to a nondancer’s eye, it’s entertaining because of his tempo changes.
that’s just it. ten’s a master of entertainment. he’s SO natural on stage that his performances feel and most definitely ARE genuine. the energy and life he brings on stage are indescribable. he has intention and feeling, something that a lot of dancers lack.
another example is one of my personal favorite performances, Devils. ten’s natural ability to perform is showcased immensely here; especially his flirtatiousness, confidence, and intensity. he’s in his element and it’s very apparent.
one of the most complex things ten has a grasp on is body understanding. he knows his body, how it moves, and how to manipulate it. ten understands his body’s textures, like those shown. this is one of the most important things a dancer can ever learn.
ten’s usage of his arms and hands will forever amaze me. never in my life have i seen someone who has such beautifully sculpted hands use them in such a way. he understands his body so much that his arms alone make him look 6 inches taller when he moves.
i could seriously talk about how insane his wrists are, because it’s my favorite part of him to watch. they hold so much grace and elegance, and often hold the most texture of his movements. the quality of his movement is founded in his arms and wrists. take DIAD for example:
ten’s torso and head compliment those arms sooo magically. he flows his arms through to his head then his torso, or vice versa, which is no rookie feat. it flows together like water, as his entire movement quality as a whole, does. this video explains it all. he’s truly amazing.
watching ten, it’s very clear he’s trained in many different styles in many areas of dance. it becomes more apparent when he choreographs, because he often mixes modern, tutting, house, contemporary, hip hop, and borderline ballet techniques into his art.
that being said, being versatile is one of ten’s greatest strengths. his willingness to learn, to adapt, and to improve is really inspiring. it adds to his textures and control, which shows how seasoned and mature of a performer and dancer he is.
lovely. co-choreographed with winwin, the behind the scenes shows us the intriguing creative process. ten’s process is interesting, because it’s a modern piece, he’s morphing modern and contemporary technique together. but also adding in his own flavor and touch.
ten’s influence in the lovely video is clear; his style and artistry shines through no matter where or what style he’s doing, but especially that in contemporary, which is an emotion/performance based technique, hence why ten excels at it.
if he seems to get better every time you watch him, it’s because he DOES. again, versatility has to do with this. he constantly is adding more styles into his dance library, which adds to his experience and allows him to open another level of creativity, especially when creating.
i hope that one day ten will show us more freestyle. it’s one of the most vulnerable things a dancer can do, and often releases and shows the true foundations and passion a person has for dancing/performing. the world deserves to see his beautiful soul.
i’d also like to acknowledge the fact that ten is not only a dancer, but a choreographer and artist too. many dancers are ONLY dancers. they dance well, and move on. but ten is a choreographer and PERFORMER. he brings life to any stage he sets foot on.
i’ll stop before i continue on forever, because god knows i could. i respect and admire ten more than i could ever attempt to say, and one day i hope to express this to him, and maybe dance on stage with him as well. :)
