Dear Entertainment writers. You SEVERELY keep missing the point when you try to use the "well C*Dubyah has other queer characters therefore they cannot be in the wrong".
There is a VAST difference between S*P*N and let's say Roswell or Riverdale. A very big difference. S*P*N did not start out with known queer intent. You could make the argument it had always been there but the moment we're at NOW didn't mean to happen—
Cas himself wasn't even meant to stay past a handful of episodes. The difference here is that the CW has shows with leading queer characters that were INTENDED to go there. It's easy to control a queer story/character when you created them. That didn't happen with S*P*N—
Where we got to was an organic thing that developed due to several moving parts, one of which was the fandom. It was something done outside the original intent of the show. It wasn't "controllable". It wasn't something initially wanted. It disrupted this stupid fantasy—
of a "Bros Only, Til Death Do Us Part" fantasy originally realized. There is a pushback against queer representation still in network/cable TV, even if they HAVE queer characters there. Also please keep in mind this really isn't about a ~ship~. Remember how Brian Kinney—
In what... the first season of QAF, tried to kill himself on his 30th birthday? You know how "old queers" often get shunted into the "Wise Old Man/Woman/Drag Queen" role? Young queer rep IS fantastic because it's showing the younger generations they DO matter, but—
what about those 35+ folk? What about 40+? 50+ who lived through the AIDS crisis where they were told no one cared about them? Those middle aged folk who are JUST realizing they can be who they want to be? It's easy to tell the younger crowd to not be afraid—
But who's showing that to the Gen X'r who had to grow up with "What are you, a faggot?" thrown in their face and basically told by the US government that if you had AIDS you deserved to die? So I really reject this concept that "Oh, CW/WB has queer rep they're fine"—
Because that's not true. They had a character who ORGANICALLY became queer, and squashed their opportunity to have that realized. This network/studio did not have the balls to go through with a relationship that healed MANY who watched the show.
It's not about a ship. It never was. It's the people who grew up in intolerant households or with abrasive/absent parents who never felt like they were worthy of love, or could give love, only to have someone see the best in us and believe in us and love us REPRESENTED on screen.
and yes this rant was after reading that article by @JamesHibberd so thanks my guy! i could have written 50 more tweets on this but I'm tired (and my friends are tired) of CONSTANTLY having to explain it to you people. Like absolutely sick of it
