As a special education teacher, this year has been really difficult for me. It’s hard to work with the kids the way you need to so that they understand the content they are supposed to. How do you help a troubled reader over zoom?
What if the technology doesn’t work the way that it needs to?
There are SO many things that can (and sometimes do) go wrong with online learning. I have started to create some helpful hints for parents when working with students with special needs at home.
Not only am I having to try to teach special education online to my students, I am having to teach my own child at home that has special needs.
My youngest son, Tyler, has a learning disability in reading. He was a very late bloomer in every category. He didn’t walk until he was 26 months old. He didn’t talk in simple sentences until he was almost 4 years old. We have struggled a lot with his learning over the years.
As I work with Tyler at home, I can only imagine how hard this is for parents that do not have a teaching background, and especially don’t have a teaching background in special education. I will try to post a few helpful tips and tricks pages every week.
I hope that this will at least spark some ideas that might help you and your child as you work together at home.
The first list that I have created is on Repeated Behavior. These are just some suggestions to start you thinking of things that you can do at home to help stop the unwanted behavior.
The next list of suggestions that I would like to share today is Lack of Concentration. Lots of kids struggle with this, and these suggestions will hopefully get you thinking about some things you can do to help your child.
I hope that these are helpful for some parents that are struggling teaching their children at home. Hope you have a great week of learning!
