Many hands made these stories. I am indebted to Makwa Creative Producer @JoleneBanning, to Rose LeMay @The_IRG who kept us organized and to @AnticaLTD's @DebbiePacheco @kathleengoldhar @mitchstuart_ @lisagabrieletv and of course to @stuartcoxe
Seven Truth's is about community and hope, the resiliency of our people and the beauty of our stories, their power to heal and to educate. Our backbone is Elder Sam Achneepineskum, who, in every episode, explains the seven teachings in our language, Anishinabemowin.
The first episode is about Love - it's about Sam, his love for the land and our people and how we can all benefit from the 7 teachings. Episode 2 is Bravery, about how our kids face more than any child should, just for the right to get a high school education. Listen to them.
Humility is the episode about allyship. About Anishinaabe kwe Lucille Atlookan, an incredible artist whose first poem made artist Lora Northway question herself and what it means to be an ally. Their relationship is the story of TBay, of Canada, of examining what humility means.
Wisdom is about Dr. Michael Kirlew, a Black physician who became a champion of Indigenous rights after what he experienced in Sioux Lookout, a town home to a former Indian Hospital, a tool of apartheid. Kirlew has devoted his life to bringing equity to First Nations people.
Honesty is about Iskatewizaagegan, Shoal Lake #39 and how they are trying to bring honesty to the City of Winnipeg. The community wants Winnipeg to pay up after 100 years of removing clean drinking water from the lake. Winnipeg has grown at Shoal Lake's expense. How is that fair?
Respect is about #landback - the occupation of Anicinabe Park in 1974 and how it should be written, taught in every history book. How it came on the heels of Wounded Knee, Alcatraz Island and out of civil rights activism of the 1960s. Grateful to Lynn Skead Tyler Cameron @rjjago
Is Canada ready to face the Truth? This final teaching is about Barbara Kentner, told through her sister Melissa Kentner who was with Barbara when she was hit with a metal trailer hitch, and, through journalist @willowfiddler. Truth is about racism, TBay, Canada and #MMIWG.
