@danilaserra_eco and @elirakuka have created an amazing program. I’ve seen lots of praise for it in my feed. I’ve also seen griping that the efforts of these two women – both with young children, during a global pandemic – aren’t enough. 1/7 https://twitter.com/danilaserra_eco/status/1331262421630148610
Remember that there are humans on the back end of this. Matching mentors and mentees will not happen instantaneously. Loosening the eligibility criteria increases the scale but doesn’t change the number of people available to do this. 2/7
And time is scarcer than ever right now. The humans on the back end of this project have tiny humans who are depending on them more than would typically be the case. Childcare centers are not operating at full capacity, schools are closed. 3/7
Yes, eligibility criteria do mean that some people will be excluded. But this program is actually open to many who may not otherwise be able to access this level of mentorship. What a great first step! 4/7
More generally, no one is entitled to be able to participate in a program like this. It is not a right. It’s an opportunity. if you are eligible, make the most of it! If you are not, hold tight; it’s not forever! 5/7
Finally, to the senior econs complaining: realize that you’re putting it back on two mothers of young children who, in the midst of a global pandemic, took some initiative that you did not. 6/7
Let’s not let this be just another case of women’s service never being enough. 7/7
