White friends: When you center your experience as the one that all folks in tech go through, it's incredibly harmful. Saying things like "You can do this too if you just believe in yourself" or "If I can do it, anyone can" completely disregards the lived experiences of many folks https://twitter.com/dev_nikema/status/1331647882668113922
Whiteness gives us the ability to fail upward. Our failures are forgiven, written off as not our fault, or defined by the eventual successes that they bring. That isn't the case for many, many people, especially people of color.
No one is telling you that you can't celebrate. No one is saying don't share your story. Just recognize that it is just that - YOUR story. Celebrate and share what you did - it might help someone, but be cognizant of the privileges that got you to where you are.
And then use those privileges to help lift or push up those that don't have your privilege. Change your message from "Believe in yourself" to "I believe in you" and then prove that by recommending minoritised folks for promotions and jobs.
Some other things that can help:
- Do mock interviews (once you have some experience in hiring)
- Help with resume reviews
- Retweet and share job search posts
- Keep a list of jobs you come across. Share them often
- Hire from your networks, but make sure your network is wide
