Is there a theoretical basis for interior design that can be taught?

If so, do you have any recommendations to learn more?
My primary exposure to interior design is scrolling through glossy Pinterest photos, which gives a sense that it's all about taste, budget, and just having patience to find great furniture, colors, patterns, etc.

I'm curious if there are underlying principles that can be taught?
Interior design is one of those disciplines that's looked down upon a bit as superficial, but I've come to appreciate it more and more. The spaces we inhabit play such a huge role in our experience of life! (This became even more obvious to me when lockdown started in March.)
