In the small market town where I live, I was speaking about Jung with a friend. The barman, who was reading, and in his 20s, interjected with an opinion on Aion. I politely asked how he felt about this work. He said, he found it difficult but was led to it by Jordan Peterson.
This was a few years ago now, but I still remember the conversation because I had never come across, irl, a 20-something single white male who was reading Jung because of Peterson. And here we are. He was tall and blonde. Despite their sincerity, I felt uneasy.
The young man had just been to a Jordan Peterson event. He found meaning and solace in Peterson's prose and namely Peterson's evocation of Jung. I had mentioned at the time, and now, there needs to be a serious interrogation of Jungian thought and the alt-right.
While I won't give a précis of the work here, as you can read above (or hear Johnson read an extract: ), Peterson isn't a Jungian analyst, he's a clinical psychologist. But I don't see discussions about Jung and the alt-right within the Jungian community.
For full disclosure, I am still highly undecided whether to pursue formal research of Jung at doctorate level or to train to become an analyst. There are many reasons for my ambivalence. But the one relevant for this thread is something which has played on my mind for a year.
