WOW: "corruption is the real secret of NSO Group's success in Mexico". Devastating @haaretzcom piece. Quick THREAD.
2. Background: Mexico = *major* abuser of Pegasus spyware. So many cases. A common victim thread: Family of folks slain & disappeared by cartels. Their lawyers. And those investigating. https://citizenlab.ca/2019/03/nso-spyware-slain-journalists-wife/
3. Spying on cartel victims' families is bad. Which is why NSO has been peddling a counter narrative: their tech was used to capture El Chapo Guzman. Now @haaretzcom slams that claim.
4. Export of NSO spyware requires a license from the Defense Ministry. They must guarantee that they weren't involved in bribery. Only... it seems that they were.
5. Ex. head of MX agency that oversaw Pegasus abuses fled to Israel after being charged with torture & kidnapping. @haaretzcom reports he's also wanted for questioning about Pegasus. https://www.eluniversal.com.mx/english/ayotzinapa-tomas-zenon-fled-israel
6. @oyoyoy calls out how NSO spins the press: Providing "you can't use it" information that cannot be verified. Unfortunately this stuff has been catnip to some who are chasing 'insider' pieces on the company.
7. NSO's PR shop is almost certainly working overdrive today to try to mitigate the renewed scrutiny on their export licensing that this report will trigger. https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/tech-news/.premium.HIGHLIGHT-the-secret-of-nso-s-success-in-mexico-1.9327961
8. A reminder that @RodRosenstein is on the team representing NSO in court right now... https://twitter.com/jsrailton/status/1266801731104657409
