Where do we go now? A thread:

1. We don& #39;t need a CDM! Say what? Lots of reaction to yesterday and it& #39;s typical fan reaction. We all got the attacking football we& #39;ve been demanding... BUT now everyone is unhappy because we are too open. HOW TO FIX THIS -->
2. Fred& #39;s stats actually stand up with the best CDM& #39;s you can name when it comes to passing AND defending. There is literally nobody else playing as well as him, I& #39;ve checked. A few wayward passes when he& #39;s being more & #39;creative& #39; but in a pivot he works! WHY ARE WE OPEN -->
3. We are open because our back line is used to playing counter attack and are too deep! Fred and Donny did very well, but connecting an attacking front line and a counter attacking defensive line is impossible! The gaps are too big to play out of pressure.
HOW DO WE FIX IT --->
4. When we are pressed hard we need a player like Donny in the pivot to play out. Mcsauce is decent but nowhere near the same ability to pass accurately, quickly and under pressure. This is more valuable in controlling the game than another & #39;defensive& #39; player. Donny NOT A CDM -->
5. Donny doesn& #39;t need to be a CDM. He can tackle well enough and has great awareness to cover gaps. Thats all he needs. He can get us out of the press better than Fred. Together they are a good partnership IF... our defenders get their line sorted out.
WHO NEEDS TO DO WHAT -->
6. A line as high as Liverpool& #39;s would terrify me. But somewhere between where they are now and that would work. At the moment our defence just tear back to our penalty box as soon as the ball is turned over. They need to squeeze!
BUT THEY ARE SLOW? -->
7. Typically our defenders are in decent positions and our FB& #39;s are quick. Hold the line more, a defender steps out and tries to slow down (not tackle). This allows players to get back and gaps get covered. With a higher line wingers and midfielders can help.
LAZY WINGERS --->
8. I used to think our forwards don& #39;t track back enough. But looking at this, a quickly dropping line increases the distance for them to recover. They need a full pitch sprint to help out. A higher line enables them to get back without wiping themselves out!
STRENGTHEN SQUAD -->
9. Of all positions we could probably do with a pacey CB. Lindelof/Maguire doesn& #39;t work. Having pace and quality like an Upamecano in there would give the back line the confidence to hold the line before dropping. Or step out and destroy attacks before they build!
PRESSING -->
10. This higher line would also make any press much more effective. A higher back line will connect the team when we are playing attacking football. Once we survive the transition we are awesome on the counter! A few tweaks and I believe we can be onto something!
