In 2016 I watched a video where a woman who thrifted a lot explained how much the trend of thrifting as a cool activity is ruining her shopping experience. She talked about how people with money would come buy hoards of clothes leaving nothing for her, an actual struggling person
So I started to view thrifting different. It’s sustainable but was EYE really thrifting for the sustainability or did I like the feeling of buying hella stuff for less money. It was definitely the latter for me and I feel like It is for most people. They just want lots of clothes
With that being said, I started the thrift significantly less because I felt like I was overstepping boundaries when it came fo people who are genuinely struggling. I don’t NEED clothes that bad to where I MUST go buy up all the size 2 jeans at goodwill
Stores like that are for people who NEED clothes. So if you’re someone like me, who isn’t hurting for the next fit, please leave those pair of slacks on the rack for the person who really only has $20 for a job interview fit. You really don’t need It as much as they do.
If I find the video I’ll link It but the girl was speaking so passionately about how she hated the Macklemore song b/c despite It making thrifting less embarrassing, It sent a bunch of yt kids from affluent areas down to the thrift store. Thus taking another space from the poor
And honestly? I kinda felt where she was coming from. Imagine a wealthy mom pulling up to a backpack drive at a church to get their kids backpack for school when she could simply buy It. Like yes she would save money but what about the ppl who don’t even have money to save
Idk, anyway that’s why I don’t thrift per say. Vintage shopping is best for me. You help a small business, the selection is curated so the racks aren’t full, the clothes are actually vintages, and I’m not stepping on anybody toes.
