10 reasons why you should rethink studying Architecture
1. The pay sucks
Many architects don’t start seeing decent money until after they become somewhat experienced, licensed, and accomplished. This generally takes 5-10 years out of Uni;
Entry-level salaries have always been very meager, and long hours are required.

2. Sleep Deprivation
It’s actually proven that Architecture student get the least hours of sleep. You’ll always be tired.

3. Terrible hygiene and eating habits
You’ll often times sleep in the studio and then have very early studio classes. Your eating options are very limited and well, the hygiene part... mehn, you’ll find your way around it.

4. It is very expensive
You’ll spend a lot, on group assignments, models, printing, drawing boards, pens, gadgets. I still can’t get over how much I spent on a 1-unit modeling course.

5. Intimidating Jury
Every studio project has a “crit” or “review” session called jury and these can be the scariest minutes of your life. Btw, studio is usually between 5 and 10 units of your semester units; don’t mess this up.

6. Miss out on social activities
Architecture is very time consuming. Studio projects take up a lot of time and efforts. So if you’re not so fast and efficient, you might have to skip out on that show or that football match.

7. Your glass is always half empty
This is how architecture is taught. There is always more you could do, things you could try, or ways it could be better. Your project will never be done. You’ll always have to learn that new software, max, lumion, maya, twin motion...

8. Redos
Now imagine working on your project to the point where you’ve spent days on it, or weeks on it, and you’re putting all this hard work, and then you go to present it to your studio lecturer, and he gets out a red pen and puts a cross through it and says, redo.

9. Number of years in school
No one talks about how many years you spend studying. In Nigeria, 4 to 5 years of BSc, 1 to 2 years of Msc or MArch., a couple of years of pupilage, and as many years it takes you to pass your professional exams.

10. The Debbie Downers
A lot of the people in architecture have not had it easy, and they are quick to remind you of their long hard journey. Many may try to dampen your dreams of being an Architect.
It’s easy to get sucked into the narcissism.

This thread is not to be a “wet blanket”, disparage the profession, or discourage anyone from becoming an Architect. Architecture is a beautiful course to study, and it really does open up your mind.
My intention is to share some of the harsh realities that many people experience. By keeping keen awareness of the dark side, you can be 2 steps ahead of what many Architects encounter.
