I was given early intervention at age 7, being white helped but it was also bc my mom fought the admins for almost 2yrs before they even agreed to test me
I was well behaved with grades slightly-below-average, so my school just saw me as a dumb kid with a karen mom https://twitter.com/ribbitpiano/status/1330944309315637249">https://twitter.com/ribbitpia...

but a 20min hw assignment took me 2-3hrs to do, and I still barely knew how to read
My mom kept telling admin something was wrong & they actively resisted her with anything they could think of before finally giving in just to get her to shut up

a team of professionals from the school board watched me for a week.
I was diagnosed on the spot with a textbook but severe case of ADD & immediately given a 504 plan

I remember watching my moms reaction to my the first report card after starting adderall, it was the first time she was happy to see it.
I went from all C’s to A’s
bottom line, I got fucking lucky just to be given the bare minimum for what I needed bc my mom didn’t stop fighting

schools WILL do everything in their power sometimes to prevent children from receiving the accommodations they need to succeed, bc they hate having to expend the extra time and energy for the kids that decades ago would’ve just been labeled as dumb or dull
& for the lucky few that get a 504, its STILL a daily struggle to keep your protections respected and intact
the amount of times I had to remind my middle & high school teachers that it’s literally AGAINST THE LAW for them to deny me access to my accommodations is just gross!

School and growing up is difficult enough to deal with when u aren’t neurotypical, & the added embarrassment of trying to act like u can’t feel people staring at u for getting more time to finish a quiz, doesn’t help either.
but at least I got help early, at least I didn’t grow up thinking I was stupid like when I was 6
(I wrote this thread yesterday but didn’t post bc I was angry, but I woke up still angry about it so idc)
