Everyone has their own story about how they came to doing justice work and I want to share part of mine.

This is Richard Moore. He will be killed by the state of South Carolina on Dec 4. I worked on his case as part of the capital punishment clinic at Cornell Law School. 1/7
In 1999, he went into a convenience store and nobody disagrees that he went in without a gun. But he and the clerk got into an argument and the clerk pulled a gun. Richard got the gun away from him. The clerk pulled a 2nd gun & both got shot. Richard lived, the clerk died. 2/7
Richard is on death row because the system failed him. His trial attorneys failed by not presenting evidence in his defense, & the state-appointed lawyers did the same. New lawyers presented evidence that could've shown he was ineligible for execution, but the courts refused. 3/7
Right now, it’s unclear if SC is going to be able to kill Richard on 12/4 because they've said publicly they don’t have lethal injection drugs while telling Richard & the courts it plans to carry out the execution anyway. They will not tell Richard how it plans to kill him. 4/7
This is the death penalty in America. It is a stain on our democracy. It is the by-product of a racist and biased criminal legal system where individuals often lack due process and are killed because of the color of their skin and economic status. It should be abolished. 5/7
My views on the criminal legal system were largely informed by my work on cases like Richard's. I do not believe that you are the worst mistake you've ever made. And I don't believe the system has a right to kill you in the name of retribution or as a "collective" statement. 6/7
Richard does not deserve to die. Over the next few days, I hope you take some time to read more about Richard’s case, his life story, share it, and see what you can do to help, here: https://justice360sc.org/category/richard-moore/ 7/7
