Sadly not 1993, It was ~1998 for me. It's wild how much things have changed.

In those days we had a 9.6k modem on newly-available-in-australia AOL Dial up on a Windows 95 machine... We later got a faster modem (33.6k) 1/ https://twitter.com/markrendle/status/1331194975590240256
Because we lived in a rural part of Australia, the maximum line speed was ~19kbps. Even so, it was AMAZING. I ran up the phone bill something fierce (local calls were still ~20c then).

In the early 00's all of my friends started getting DSL connections (256k to 1mbit) 2/
I couldn't get DSL, so finally in 2004 I was able to get satellite broadband.

I begged my parents and and thanks to a government subsidy (HiBIS) we were able to get satellite at a *somewhat* affordable price. We got the 256/64 service.

It was *two way* satellite 3/
