I see some merit in what the province is trying to do - focus restrictions on where evidence is showing covid spreads. I can appreciate that and also appreciate the difficult decisions that the government has to make in such situations. 1/
My concern is that we are experimenting with an uncertain approach as opposed to emulating other jurisdictions who have used short lockdowns to cut covid numbers rapidly (about 50% reduction in daily new case #s per week). 2/
Alberta’s approach relies on two things - that covid spread in places like gyms and restaurants is actually quite low and that people will comply with orders not to visit in public homes despite bars, gyms, bingo halls, etc being open. I hope those assumptions hold true. 3/
If the assumptions don’t hold true, then Alberta will likely lock down anyway. In that case, the AB approach has just extended the negative impacts on the economy.
