Thread: 1/ As we approach #WorldAIDSDay 2020, we take a look back at World AIDS Day in #Ireland 30 years ago, in 1990, from the #NationalHIVArchive. The international theme in 1990 was #WomenandAIDS.
/ This postcard was produced by the Women and AIDS group, a member of the #DublinAIDSAlliance. The back of the card read…
/ … “It is important that we begin to ‘carry condoms’, insist on their use and that we are not ashamed or embarrassed to be going around with what has been traditionally regarded as the 'man’s (!) contraceptive' or a bit of a joke. Make every day Carry a Condom Day!"
/ A newssheet was also produced by the Women and AIDS group with the slogan “It doesn’t take World AIDS Day to make AIDS a women’s issue”. It featured articles on #LivingwithHIV, #SaferSex, #ChildrenandHIV, and Positive Healthy alternatives.
/ The Red Hot + Blue album was released (internationally) for #WorldAIDSDay1990 with proceeds from the sales “to benefit AIDS research and relief”. The album featured 20 interpretations of classic Cole Porter songs including one from @U2, and from @SineadOConnor.
/ The #InDublin magazine featured an interview with @SineadOConnor talking with Damian Corless about her involvement in the Red Hot + Blue campaign to raise funds and raise awareness about #AIDS.
/ The TV guide in the @Independent_ie on 1st December 1990 shows an International #AIDS Day special – Red, Hot and Blue - scheduled for 8.05pm on Network2.
/ The #DublinAIDSAlliance organised a concert for #AIDS in the @olympiatheatre on #WorldAIDSDay1990. The event programme cost £1 which included entry in a raffle that included prizes of signed copies of the Red Hot + Blue LP by @SineadOConnor and @U2.
/ The concert included performances from @BloomLuka, Forget-me-Nots, Gavin Friday & Man Seezer, Maria McKee & (Bruce), @Hazel_OConnor, @TheStunningBand, and Lord John White, and the programme included a message from @SineadOConnor to the #DublinAIDSAlliance.
/ Fiachna O Braonain of the Hot House Flowers and Simon Carmody of Golden Horde were pictured (Evening Herald) busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street for #WorldAIDSDay1990, helping to raise funds for the #DublinAIDSAlliance.
/ A profile of “Dr Fiona Mulcahy, Aids consultant at St James’ Hospital, Dublin” featured in the Irish Times on 2nd December 1990. Professor Mulcahy was appointed Ireland’s first consultant specialising in #AIDS @stjamesdublin in 1987.
/ The #InDublin magazine featured an interview with Dr Derek Freedman “a practising specialist in the area of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) who has dealt with the human face of AIDS in Ireland since the disease first raised its ugly head here in the early Eighties.”
/ The Irish newspapers ( @IrishTimes @Independent_ie #SundayTimes #TheStar) featured a range of articles for #WorldAIDSDay1990, with reports about Irish Government inaction, the introduction of AZT, and how “many Irish HIV and AIDS victims” were turning to the UK for support.
