I’ve just finished a large block of teaching biomechanics across UG & MSc modules using a blended learning approach (F2F labs, live online labs, recorded lectures, online seminars/tutorials) & these are some of my reflections (or maybe ramblings) [thread if you’re interested]
I spent way more time preparing content than in usual years. Multiple modes of delivery require some serious effort. Don’t underestimate how much time it can take to record (and edit) a lecture.
I learnt the hard way early on that watching my lectures after recording can seriously zap your time & there’s a danger of falling behind on prep for other content. Edit where necessary but don’t be too precious. Students will accept minor blips, we are all human.
Some students are super motivated to learn and engage with the content you spend hours preparing, some students are not. This is no different from years without a pandemic. Accept it for what it is.
COVID has affected us all in different ways so if a student doesn’t feel motivated to engage with your online content, don’t take it personally. Maybe they can’t handle it right now but will hopefully engage when they are ready.
In the current circumstances students seem more forthcoming with questions during online lectures than in previous years in lecture rooms, so perhaps feel more comfortable asking a question using the chat function on Zoom / Teams. Something to keep in mind for the future.
Polling / Q&A software (I use @VevoxApp but lots of others are out there!) are a great way to engage students during live teaching. Preparation takes time but really helps to monitor student engagement, knowledge & understanding.

[end of ramblings]
