I love academia - the freedom to research things I find interesting - but one of the main reasons I think of leaving is this. We urgently need more non-profit journals, run by academics or academic societies, where people can submit work...
It's the people behind the journals (editors, reviewers), who bring prestige, so I'm hopeful that these crazy prices may accelerate alternative publication models
