I'd think that the pay-wallers are reading this wrong. In the sense that they're looking to exploit the surfeit of BS, by assuming that people would pay for what's not.

The problem is that a lot of people cannot tell what's BS and what's not. If they could, this might work.

What one could do is to abstract or summarize the non-BS stuff into an easy-to-parse open-access piece, with the full piece and associated links (if any) on pay-per-view/subscription credits etc.

A bit like the abstracts in reputed research journals. Sure, there can be ... +
... better ways of thinking about this and different approaches, but the point remains the same.

The 'good' work must be available - at least in essence - as freely as the nonsense.
