Thursday’s #Thanksgiving2020 &I’m just gonna say it:

Nothing wrong with being fat.

Fat is healthy.
Fat is lower a1cs.
Fat is taking insulin when my blood sugar is high.
Fat is less painful injections.
Fat is extra pump sites.

Fat is beautiful.

Each moment my glycemic care has improved, my body has gotten larger. Looking back across my life, it's clear that "skinny" has meant I was very, *very* sick.

When I was diagnosed, my mother commented about the weight I gained literally overnight. I gained back...

...at least 10 pounds in three days, largely because I rehydrated (with the help of an IV in the back of my hand).
When I started college, I ate three times a day. It was the first time since I was 12 or 13 that I made a habit of it. I gained 15-20 pounds my first semester.

Insulin causes weight gain, and ketones cause weight loss. Insulin keeps me alive; ketones could kill me. Insulin has played a part in my fatness, and that's okay. I've had multiple a1c's* in pre-diabetic ranges...

...meaning that my health has been, at times, better than many people WITHOUT #diabetes. My fat pays witness to the healthiness of my body.
As I wrestle with a potential #fibromyalgia diagnosis, I'm even more thankful for my body's padding. The pain of injections is less...

...now that I am larger. I have more pump site possibilities, like the backfat site in my portrait. My fatness lessens my pain.

I'm actively learning to be kinder to my body in the ways I talk about her. Her size is often used against us both when dealing...

...with doctors and people without diabetes, but there's not a lot of compelling medical evidence that being overweight is an inherently unhealthy thing.

Remember that, the next time #fatphobia comes up in conversation, or you're tempted to comment on someone's weight.
