On the 5th of May in 1945 Major Josef Gangl a German officer and Captain John Lee of the American 12th armor division fought alongside former French Prisoners defending Castle Itter against the Waffen SS. https://twitter.com/SilentMelody35/status/1331448484969418754
During the battle French tennis star Jean Borotra offered to vault the wall and run the gauntlet of SS positions to deliver a update to the 142nd infantry regiment. He was identified by a French reporter with the soldiers and requested an American uniform to help the battle.
Gangl was honored as an Austrian hero dying in the battle from a sniper while moving a former French Prime Minister held prisoner at the facility out of harms way. 2 days later Germany surrendered.
