THE GENIUS OF STAN.
Regardless of what you think of Eminem, this is one of the greatest hip hop tracks ever. The story telling is on a whole other level. This songās impact is also crazy, because of it the word āstanā is now in the dictionary and is used everywhere.
This song is about a crazy fan, whose obsession with Eminem causes him to unhinge as the story goes on. The chorus perfectly shows this as it says āAnd even if I could itād all be gray, but your picture on my wall, it reminds me that itās not so bad, itās not so bad.ā
The story starts with this obsessed fan writing to Eminem, his name is Stan. Heās written a lot of letters to Em, as if they were friends. Stan thinks that Em hasnāt replied yet because the postal service mustāve lost his letters.
Stan tells Em that heās his biggest fan and has posters of him on the wall and all his CDās. He also tells him that his wife is pregnant and heāll name his daughter Bonnie. This is foreshadowing because in ā97 Bonnie & Clydeā Eminem names his daughter Bonnie after his wife dies
In the second verse Stan continues to write to Eminem, this time heās becoming less patient. He gets mad at Em for not signing an autograph for his little brother at his concert. He recalls a time when Em said heād write him back. He begins to question his idol.
In the third verse, Stan canāt take it anymore. He thinks Em is intentionally ignoring him. Heās lost his idol and his will to live and so he locks his pregnant girlfriend in his carās trunk, drinks and drives the car off a bridge. Eminem was the only one that couldāve saved him.
In the fourth verse, Eminem finally writes back. He apologizes for not writing sooner, and asks Stan about his life and all the different things Stan has told him. He even leaves an autograph for Stanās brother. He worries about Stan and his mental health, (CONTINUED...)
He warns him not to do anything crazy and seek help. He then goes on to mention how he saw some guy drunk drove his car over a bridge with his pregnant girlfriend in the back. While writing this letter, he puts it all together and the story has come full circle. Stan is dead.
All in all, this is one of the greatest story telling tracks of all time. Itās impact on music as whole is huge. The story and the meaning is still relevant with some fans going so far as to stalking and obsessing over their idols. Theyāre still human, but not to a Stan.
