today i got an email from a councillor’s office to follow-up on my twitter thread last night. Apparently y’all are making a lot of noise & it’s getting their attention; so well done! It seems as though the City is aware their PR is not going well and are responding. [1/7]
Thought: if they stopped focusing on PR & took the time to go to encampments, work collaboratively w us, there wouldn’t be this PR disaster. In the call, the office acknowledged the failure to include key people in the “encampment table” - and agreed to try to change this. [2/7]
In my conversation, there was no denial that there is a plan for encampment clearing. An inside source has confirmed this. The call DID confirm that ppl will have a 72 hour notice to clear. Note: still unsure where people are supposed to move to. [3/7]
But at the same time councillors are also saying that there is NO plan to mass evict; this contradicts the call i was on. it is becoming increasingly apparent that there is no comms between councillors & those who are at City level operations (i.e. Parks, SSHA, etc). [4/7]
let’s say there actually is no plan to mass evict (likely untrue): will the mayor put a moratorium on encampment evictions? Will councillors back this? We have been asking for this since March. the response: a constant threat of these makeshift homes being destroyed. [5/7]
Imagine always having a looming sense that your home could be slashed at any time. Imagine seeing your friends keep dying fm preventable reasons. I wish decisionmakers would personalize these realities. See the people & communities. These aren’t stats; they're loved ones. [6/7]
ACTION: write the mayor, councillors, SSHA, Parks: for a moratorium on tent evictions, for REAL options, for the inclusion of voices of residents at their “internal encampment tactical team”. For collaboration & consultation. Trust: they see all of you speaking. Keep at it! [7/7]
