In middle school, our curriculum shamed kids (+ our parents) about healthy eating, and a teacher held up couple tbsp of sugar in a baggie and said "you wouldn't wanna drink this, would you"? Actually ma'am, yes, I would, that looks quite yummy

Should things have less added sugars in them, in general? Probably. Am I still going to drink soda? Also yes.

Also maybe a middle school curriculum focused on the shame of "bad eating" should have actually taught us how important hydration is and let us carry water bottles around or have more frequent water fountain breaks. I think I was constantly thirsty back then.
In, let's just say 6th grade for example, I'd drink a glass or milk (or juice) with breakfast, a cartoon of milk with lunch, and another glass of milk with dinner, sometimes with an optional beverage either just after school or before bed, usually kool aid, more juice, or soda.
I don't think it's an exaggeration to say I (try to!) drink more water in a day than I used to drink in a month. I thought the way I felt all the time was just the normal state of being alive. It turns out it was constant, persistent thirst.
Instead of shaming kids about food habits they have very little control over or about their bodies, maybe just...encourage them to say hydrated? IDK but it seems to me like that's the the building blocks they're not actually building.
Anyway this thread took a hard left turn lol but sugar is delicious and it is not bad for you, the thing that's bad for you is not having water
