Mini-Thread - Inspired by @EdLatimore gonna do a mini movie review on Man on Fire. This is one of my favourite movies of all time. Both story and execution are simply amazing and it& #39;s full of amazing small details that make second viewing enjoyable too.
The movie is about a former French foreign legion soldier who has lost all hope within his life. He slips into suicidal depression, alcoholism and self hatred. This is what alot of men go through, it also shows how society genuinely do not care about the suffering of men.
He then goes and meets his only friend he has left. Who gets him a job as a security guard for a rich couple& #39;s daughter in Mexico. This is why this story is never promoted. Male depression is alleviated through meaningful work and family. He was robbed of his ability to help
The next generation. He has no family, this has robbed him of his purpose. The work now gave him what was taken from him through his work. He now works with the child he is paid to protect and helps raise her as his own. She while a child, allows him to see hope for the future.
This hope is what makes and breaks both men and society as a whole. People say fear is the most powerful emotion, this is incorrect. Hope is. She is then kidnapped in a herioc struggle where he did the best he could, but failed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hur4Esxuurk">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
The child is the physical manifestation of what he sees as promise and hope for the future. When you rob good men of this, there is nothing they will not do to reclaim this. Which leads to one of the greatest scenes in all of cinema. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNz_zgttRDQ">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
He then realizes that what has happened is bigger than just the girl that was robbed from him, but the scale of the enemy does not phase him. This now becomes a battle of pure will between the righteous and the corrupt. When this happens, the righteous only win when they have
Nothing left to lose (this is also the story of sacrifice in the bible). This is why at every kill that is righteous, they flash the cross somewhere in the screen. At every kill he slowly learns more and more about how the entire scam works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izxkFm060yU">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
This is a perfect explanation of how evil works, people who are self interested working without principles and just following orders. This is where the frustration of the "i& #39;m just a professional" line is such a writing masterpiece.
After doing so much damage to the institutional corruption that robbed him of his symbol of hope for his life and the future. He then commits the ultimate sacrifice men sometimes must make, which is his life for the child that he loves to ensure the future https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crB4KD3p8HU">https://www.youtube.com/watch...
The story of ruthlessness, depression, corruption and that there is always hope for a man no matter how flawed his past, can repent for the sins past if he works for the future. And that no evil can stop good men, if good men wish to do so. Evil is lazy and self interested.
One of the greats of all time. It encompasses the best of the world, masculinity and self sacrifice.
