So, here's a summary of the good and the bad in today's announcement, starting with the bad
REally? Casinos open? Restaurants open? despite strong CDC evidence for them being huge sources of transmission. This will not help.
Workplace masking good in Calgary and Edmonton but why not the rest of the province? 6 outbreaks in oilsands facilities, 8 workplace outbreaks in the North. No province wide mask mandate.
Good: no indoor social gatherings, max wedding/funeral of 10 people with no receptions. Huge exception to worship facilities though, not good.
Schools: overall these restrictions are good and needed. But we need to bolster mitigation measures in elementary schools: masking in class, decreased class sizes, and ensure adequate ventilation. use this time of closed Jr/sr highs to implement this.
Missing: national COVID app, support for lower SES and racialized communities. Fixed criteria for staged reopening to help transparency.
If there is one overriding message is that these measures will improve transmission rates but likely not to the extent needed. This essentially will cause a deeper lockdown in the near future that will last longer than is necessary, and overall, gets a D+ from me.
