I'm coming up on my first break of my first full semester as an online teacher during a pandemic. I have learned one major thing: Give Grace.
Give grace if a student is late to class, they may have been working on something else, or using the restroom.
Give grace if a student doesn't always respond, they may be working and have their volume muted.
Give grace if a student doesn't do the work, they may not understand, may not have time, may not think it matters, etc.
Give grace if a student doesn't answer your questions, they may be nervous to answer online in front of others.
Give grace if a student's work is subpar, it may be the best they can do, or they may be trying to speed through to take care of home matters.
Give grace if a student can't unmute or turn their camera's one they may have a low-battery smoke detector, or a shirtless guardian.
I worried about robbing students of their learning by giving too much grace, and the fact is, we are in a pandemic, in a traumatic event.
Science is infinite. Those who want to and can learn now, will. Those who can't, will learn science later. It is infinite. There is so much to learn. I will teach them how to do science now and science facts later. We will survive this pandemic together, with grace.
