We also set Latinx creators up for failure by thinking a singular show needs to represent the entire Latinx experience. It cannot possibly do that and frankly gives me so much anxiety as someone trying to break in out here.
When Gentefied came out I saw comments under the Netflix page saying “not Mexican I had to turn it off after one episode”
“My family isn’t like this.”

Okay??? But that is THEIR experience. It’s a very SPECIFIC experience.

Why do we do this
Our stories are universal. But if One Day at a Time doesn’t represent me, it still is a VALUABLE show. It has UNIVERSAL stories.

We need MORE. We need more Afro and Indigenous stories. We need more stories that aren’t the same Latinx lens they keep pushing.
We need more.
Studios clearly have a SPECIFIC lens through which they want our stories to be told.

We do not all fit that.

The answer is we need MORE free will to play in this space. Allowed to take risks. Have the FUNDING and MARKETING to take risks.
I also think it’s difficult to market a show at THEE Latinx show when white shows aren’t marketed like this.

My show is about mental health and trauma treatment. Some of the characters are Latinx. But it’s not a LATINX show it’s a mental health comedy
WE know we aren’t a monolith.

Studios do not know this.

I feel for all the creators who are trying to tell their stories who are overlooked because it’s not the “traditional” Latinx story or who are cancelled because studios do not see their full potential and worth
