WARNING: EXTREME WRESTLING NERDERY AHEAD
So, here's some dumb wrestling facts: The Undertaker and Randy Savage only faced each other 1-on-1 three times. None of those matches ever aired on TV, either. All three of those times, Savage was a substitute for Ultimate Warrior, who had grown incredibly flaky by Summer 91.
They also squared off in 5 tag matches late in 1991/very early 92. Savage & Duggan vs. Taker & Snake. They also appeared in 2 Rumble PPV matches together (technically 3, but Savage "left" before his number was called in 91) and only were in the ring at the same time in 92.
They were also in the ring together in a non-televised Rumble in Japan in 94, and teamed together on 3 house shows in 92 and 93: vs. Flair & Berzerker once, and Adam Bomb & Giant Gonzalez twice, which I'm sure was a barn burner. But that's it, at least as far as I can find.
Both men had amazing careers, and yet they were only in the same ring a handful of times. When Taker came in, Savage was a heel, then "retired" (although available to fill in, obviously). Savage officially returned, and about 2 months later, Taker turned face as well.
Savage was gone in late 94 after shifting to a primarily commentary/ambassador role for most of that year. The stars just never lined up properly for a full run between the two somehow, and if you're a wrestling fan, you gotta think that would've been a helluva match.
This video features the only released footage of one of those singles matches (note: the video is the same 30 seconds looped a few times). But since it was definitely taped... maybe it'll show up on the Network someday?
Thus endeth my supreme nerdery. As you can see, I'm making great use of my time off.
