how i learn kpop dances!!

—— day two of my thanksgiving thread week
make sure to check out my other threads if you haven’t already!! https://twitter.com/jiheondiet/status/1331298594784243714
hello!! learning dances is one of my favourite ways to lose weight - i feel more involved with the music i love, and it feels more like fun than an intentional workout. in this thread, i’ll go through the steps that help me learn my favourite dances!!
1. watch the dance practice a few times, and get a feel for the rhythm.

learn how to count!! every song has a time signature from which the rhythm is set. take, for example, iz0ne’s f¡esta.

(there’s supposed to be a voice note here that wouldn’t post, check the qrt)
do you get a feel for the rhythm? learning how to count will make it easier to break down the movements into smaller, more manageable chunks to learn.
2. read the lyrics

continuing with the f¡esta example, in the beginning of the chorus, the girls move their hands as if they’re holding a globe, then put their hands to their mouth. the lyrics at that point? “i swallow the sun”.
the movements are a tool to telling the story of the song, and understanding the lyrics is key to understanding the movements.
3. watch the mirrored dance practice first.

i like to watch the mirrored dance practice at .5x, .75x and normal speed to try and get a feel of the song. i like doing this to understand the very basics of the movements.
4. watch tutorials

once i’ve practiced along with the dance practice to the point where i feel comfortable with the movements, i watch tutorials with the objective of catching any details i may have missed. since we practiced with the dance practice, here we can just focus on+
perfecting small details and embellishments.
5. fancams

i watch fancams mainly to get a feel of the emotions that idols put into the dance. facial expressions are key to making a dance interesting and entertaining to watch.
6. back to the dance practice

after perfecting basic moves, small details and facials, it’s back to the dance practice at normal speed. since idols don’t have to worry about singing in dance practices, they usually spend the most energy on making the dance look great.
match this energy and add your own personality to the dance!! it’s always enjoyable to watch people’s interpretations of a dance, rather than just a carbon copy.
and that’s it! i hope you enjoyed reading this thread and learned something new from it. have fun dancing <3
