To be self-sufficient, I learned mixing and mastering on my own along with music and I own a bevy of plug-ins to do it in a way that suits my stuff. I think bringing that "in-house" was a smart move and has saved me much, much more than the plugins had cost.

I did a thread on my mixing techniques and master bus FX chain here. I use paid plugins because, honestly, I wanna get good results without thinking too much.
