As a way of saying thanks, here are 19 UNUSUAL TIPS TO HELP YOU BECOME A BETTER WRITER.

🚨Warning: There no shortcuts here but if you're willing to put in the work, these tips will improve your writing.

[THREAD]
1) Be a student of human nature

You are writing to a human audience.

Therefore if you want your reading to resonate, you need to understand who you're writing for.

Every good writer I know is a keen observer of human nature for this reason.
2) Drink more water

If you're dehydrated, your brain won't flow.

Most of the "brain fog" and "writer's block" you feel is very likely because you are dehydrated.

Always keep a big bottle of water with you.
3) Work out

Working out isn't just about getting into incredible shape.

It's also about giving your brain a rest.

Writing is mentally exhausting.

So if you're doing it daily (as you should be) you need to rest your brain by getting into your body.
4) Be honest

It's better to be brutally honest and risk being offensive than polite and guarantee boredom.

For a good example of honest writing, read Post Office and Women by Charles Bukowski.
5) Don't worry about what people think

All of my best tweets have come when I shot from the hip and didn't care about the backlash.

All of my worst tweets have come when I wrote them to get engagement.
6) Go for long walks

Your brain thinks its best thoughts when you're moving.

If you feel stuck for ideas, go for a long walk (preferably around nature).

The physical act of walking will get the motor moving in your brain and produce lots of random ideas.
7) Carry a notebook with you everywhere.

As you walk and get ideas, WRITE THEM DOWN!

If you wonder why you never have any good ideas, it's because you didn't write them down you plum!

Your mind has a powerful CPU but a shitty memory.
8) Get off your phone

We live in an environment where we rely on our phones for everything.

In the process, we've outsourced our ability to think to our phones.

This leads to mental atrophy which is destructive for your writing skill as writing IS a form of thinking.
9) Sleep better

Writing is exhausting.

Writing a big project is like running a marathon for your mind.

If you're not getting 7-8 hours of quality sleep per night, you're not giving your brain the rest it needs to write your next marathon.
10) Coffee

Caffeine is the writer's drug of choice.

I drink 2-3 cups per day.

Black, no sugar.

No caffeine, no creativity.
12) Read a lot

You can't be a great writer if you don't read.

I always knew I was going to be a writer because as a child I was drawn to books.

Before the internet, I spent most of my time reading books.
13) Read books that stimulate your curiosity

Stop following reading lists.

Just listen to your curiosity.

Who cares if the book is obscure and not a NY times bestseller.

You don't need permission to read.

Read what you love.

Feed your brain.
14) Write a lot

I have archives of short stories and essays I'll never publish on my Google Drive.

I've published really bad stories on Amazon (no I won't divulge my pen name)

I didn't make any money, but I learned how to put two words together.
15) Rewrite the first sentence 20+ times

In the words of direct response legend Joe Sugarman, your first sentence should send your reader down "a slippery slope."

People have short attention spans.

If the first sentence doesn't grab the reader, he's not reading on.
16) Steal

I don't mean word for word.

But if you know a certain topic gets attention, don't be afraid to use it in the headline.

These days anything with "Donald Trump" in the headline will likely get some attention.
17) Learn persuasion and hypnotism

Good writing is persuasive. Great writing is hypnotic.

Chances are you're writing to build an audience or to sell something to someone.

If you want a deep dive on this, my course on hypnotic content will help you https://bit.ly/2FmJpFm
18) Take a break

Writing is a two part process.

First you write the draft.

Then you come back and edit the crap out of it.

But between the two, make sure you take a break so your brain is refreshed and ready for part two (see points #3 & #6)
19) Love to write

Writing is a painful process but if I'm not writing, I feel even worse.

Just like exercise, it's always painful but it's also extremely rewarding.

I've learned to fall in love with the pain and so should you.
