CTV News has reported that out of 10,947 Covid-19 deaths in Canada, 10,781 (98.4%) were in Long Term Care homes.

Cancelling children's hockey and shutting down small businesses is not the answer. Directing massive resources into LTC is the answer.
When I was a med student in 2005, about 25% of acute care hospital beds were occupied by elders awaiting LTC.

In 2020, that number is still ~25%

I do not know how long it takes to build a nursing home, but I suspect <15 years.
By my lights, every senior in care should have a private room and their own bathroom. I understand this is costly, but we've spent $350 billion doing the wrong things in the pandemic so far.
Historically, family members took care of their elders at this stage of life. This made sense because this sort of care is intimate. Society has changed but we ought to be treating the PSWs and RPNs and nursing homes who we entrust our patients to like extended family members.
This means: living wages, paid sick leave so they can stay home if nose is running, full time jobs so they don't have to work 3 places to make ends meet. An end to chronic understaffing.
